VIN Verification in Napa CountyWine Country Mobile Service

Napa Valley residents, from Napa to Calistoga, can get VIN verification services without leaving the wine country.

Serving Napa, Calistoga, Yountville, and more Napa County locations

What VIN Verification Looks Like in Napa County

Napa Valley's flow of out-of-state vineyard staff, hospitality workers, and seasonal RV travelers makes VIN verification a frequent need. American Canyon and the city of Napa sit within our standard 45-minute mobile radius from Oakland; Yountville, St. Helena, and Calistoga along the upper valley require additional travel time and fees.

Common DMV friction: Napa County's single DMV office in the city of Napa serves the entire valley — and a single highway (Route 29) feeds all of it, so any DMV trip easily turns into a half-day event during harvest season.

Within our standard mobile radius

These areas sit inside the 45-minute drive from our Oakland shop — standard $$180 mobile rate applies.

What is a VIN Verification in California?

A VIN verification is a California DMV inspection required to get your out-of-state vehicle registered in the DMV database. It is a physical inspection of the vehicle – the vehicle must be present. This inspection is documented on the REG31 / VIN verifier form.

The VIN verification process ensures that the vehicle actually exists (not just on paper), and that the vehicle identification number on the vehicle itself matches what is on the title. This is an important preventive measure against fraud and theft.

What Does a Vehicle Verifier Check?

Our licensed vehicle verifier follows the REG31 form from top to bottom and documents the following:

  • The vehicle year, make, and model
  • The VIN and VIN location
  • The number of wheels and axles
  • The license plate on the vehicle
  • The fuel type the vehicle uses
  • The status of the US Federal Certification Label
  • The emissions label
  • The odometer reading
  • Vehicle type classification (automobile, commercial, motorcycle, trailer, etc.)

Why Do I Need a VIN Verification?

You may need a VIN verification for various reasons:

  • Vehicles coming from other states or countries
  • Large RVs and motorhomes (save the hassle of driving to DMV)
  • Fleet managers with multiple out-of-state vehicles
  • Body type model changes (e.g., dump truck to flatbed, utility vehicle to limousine)
  • Vehicles with a VLT (Vehicle Lien Title) stop from the California DMV lien sale unit
  • Vehicles on the IRP (International Registration Plan) program
  • Old vehicles that have fallen off the DMV system
  • Corrections of a VIN, odometer, year, or other vehicle information
  • Converting a vehicle from automobile to commercial, or vice versa, or off-highway to on-highway

What Inspections Can Private VIN Verifiers NOT Do?

Private VIN verifiers are prohibited from doing VIN inspections on certain vehicles and scenarios. These require DMV or CHP inspection:

  • Inspections on vehicles that are to be revived salvage
  • Inspections on vehicles that have been junked
  • Vehicles that are 1980 or newer who do not have their Federal Safety label
  • Motorcycles who have no supporting documents or who were in the DMV database before and fell off
  • Gray market or direct import vehicles

CHP Referrals: If you have a late model salvaged vehicle, missing public VIN, motorcycle with no documentation, or armored vehicle, you will be referred to CHP by the DMV.

Requirements to Register Out-of-State Vehicles in California

In addition to VIN verification, you will need the following documents to complete the DMV registration process:

  • Your out-of-state title, MSO (manufacturer's statement of origin), or registration card
  • For all gas-powered & some diesel-powered vehicles, you must get a smog check
  • For commercial vehicles and pickup trucks, you must get a California Weight-master Certificate
  • For all cars, trucks, coach trailers, and most PTI trailers, a VIN verification
  • Reg 343 form for ALL vehicles or trailers
  • Reg 4017 form for trailers that fall under the PTI (permanent trailer) program

Other Reasons You May Need a VIN Verification

  • Vehicle recovered from a tow yard after a lien sale - to lift the lien authorized
  • Large commercial trucks registered through IRP (International Registration Program) for mileage verification
  • Vehicle conversion from one type to another (change in body type model)
  • Vehicle has fallen off the DMV system and needs to be re-introduced
  • VIN on the car does not match the VIN on the title
