Moving from Nevada to California?

Full registration playbook for Nevadans relocating to the Bay Area — with smog gotchas baked in.

Nevada-specific quirks

1. Nevada emissions exemption doesn’t carry to California

The big one. Many Nevada vehicles have an “emissions exempt” stamp from NV registration. That exemption is Nevada-only. California will smog-test your vehicle if it falls in the gas-1976+ / diesel-1998+ category, no exceptions for prior NV exemption. Plan for a California smog appointment before you set the DMV date.

2. Aftermarket Vegas / Reno mods — verify CARB EO

Common Nevada-scene mods (non-CARB cold-air intakes, performance exhaust without EO, ECU tunes, deleted emissions equipment) will fail California smog. CARB-certified parts have an Executive Order (EO) number — verify each modification has one BEFORE the smog appointment. Failed smog means a return trip and possibly removing parts.

3. Nevada titles are clean and physical (no e-title workaround)

Nevada DMV issues paper titles by default. Most Nevadans arrive with the physical title in hand. If your vehicle has a lien, the lienholder holds the title — bring a payoff letter or lienholder contact info to put on California REG 343.

4. VIN verification — we come to you

California requires a REG 31 on every out-of-state vehicle. We do it mobile ($$180 flat within 45 min of Oakland, same week). Way faster than waiting 2-4 weeks for a DMV appointment and helping you stay ahead of the 20-day rule.

5. Use tax on recently-purchased vehicles

If you bought the vehicle in Nevada less than 12 months before establishing California residency, California may assess use tax at registration. Save your Nevada purchase paperwork (bill of sale, dealer invoice) — you’ll need it to document the ownership-timing math.

The move-to-registration sequence

See the full 20-day-rule guide for details on each step. NV-specific notes inline:

  1. 1.Switch to California insurance — same-day at most carriers. CA minimums 15/30/5.
  2. 2.Verify your aftermarket parts for CARB EO numbers — Vegas/Reno mods often fail California smog.
  3. 3.Schedule a California smog test — any state-licensed smog station. NV exemption stamps don’t apply.
  4. 4.Book a VIN verification with us — $$180 mobile, same week, we come to you.
  5. 5.Download + fill REG 343 — Application for Title or Registration, free at dmv.ca.gov.
  6. 6.Visit California DMV with: Nevada title, our REG 31, your REG 343, smog certificate, insurance proof, photo ID, NV purchase paperwork if recent.
  7. 7.Receive California plates + temp registration — same day at DMV.
